3 Simple ways to prevent Lyme Disease
Did you know there are free, easy, and effective ways to reduce your chances of getting Lyme Disease? No, it's not avoiding the outdoors at all costs, although that may prove useful as well. The key is to be proactive and consistent with tick prevention, and these simple steps can help keep you and your family safe.
1. Take a shower within 2 hours of exploring the outdoors
The CDC recommends taking a shower within 2 hours of coming indoors, as it has been shown to decrease the risk of getting Lyme disease. The benefit here is two fold. First, it helps to wash off unattached ticks, and secondly, it presents a scheduled oppurtunity to conduct a thorough tick check. Furthermore, you can remove clothing with potential unwanted hitchhikers who can be subsequently dealt with in the following step.
2. Dry your clothes for 10 minutes on high heat as soon as you get home
Don't let those unwanted travelers get a free pass hiding onto and in your clothing. Drying your clothes on high heat for ten minutes effectively kills ticks by dehydrating them so that they desicate and die. Conversely, washing clothing in hot water is NOT an effective method for killing ticks. If you are worried about dirtying your dryer with unwashed clothes, check out our RecDry dryer bag designed specifically for drying unwashed clothes in order to kill ticks.
